Dundurn Castle Courtyard: Pajaros, the bird is the word

September 1 - 27, 2009

In Cienfuegos, Bryce Kanbara created site specific works at the hospital, university, a school yard, and at the Cienfuegos Art Centre, last March. The project in Dundurn Castle's court yard responds to the history of the site he selected for the Hamilton phase of the exchange project.

Kanbara's installation comprises five panels. Four of them were derived from his scribble sketches of birds, each executed in ten seconds or less, then projected, and painted on ceiling tiles. Cuban artists were invited to send their sketches of birds, and Kanbara similarily transfered them onto the fifth panel. Visiting Cienfuegos artist Adrian Rumbaut painted his 'brick bird in flight' directly on the centre south wall panel, while helping Kanbara with his installation on August 31.

The birds are meant to evoke recollections of the aviary that was formerly located on the other side of the south wall. The theme is reinforced by the view of the dovecote that rises beyond the wall. In appearance, the images hover somewhere between recognizable, natural forms and abstract, Rorschach-like shapes. The process stimulates thought about the process of drawing and its expressive qualities.

Cuban artists who participated in his piece include Adrian Rumbaut, Alberto Velóz, Camilo Villalvilla, Carlos Varens, Daniel Alejandro, Ernesto 'El Punk' Rodríguez, Frank Sarria, Juan Carlos Echeverria, Lisbeth Ledo, Luís Alberto Pérez and Yanet Martínez.
