Anne Milne is an inter-disciplinary artist who works with visual narratives in performance, dance and text, Milne’s project builds on her recent body of work on ethics and art practices as she engages in verbal choreography and translation through a concentrated series of Latin dance classes. Prior to the site-specific phase in Cienfuegos, the artist stated that she “hoped to come to a better understanding of how culture is communicated through dance styles and through the act of partnering within the dance wondering whether Latin dance can be productively ‘taught’ outside of Latin countries and, if so, to what end.” In Cienfuegos, she collaborated with a young professional dancer, Alberto Velóz, and “entered in working partnerships with many more people,” most significantly with participating artists. She now reframes the question, “does culture need to be communicated at all? - The Hamilton component of Rhythms of the Whispering Game will explicitly remix the dancing, walking, and collaborative practice I pursued in Cuba. I will extend my ongoing collaborative dance practice with the Hamilton-based dancer and costume designer, Tanis MacArthur. Tanis and I are working together to strengthen our partnering skills and to develop a dance discourse and choreography of walking.”
