Rumbaut belongs to the new generation of Cuban artists whose practices are international, yet their concerns are equally relevant in diverse regional contexts. An example of his most relevant critique of the banality of commodified stardom is his painting Marilyn and Che which deconstructs the spectacles of heroism and celebrity. Ironically, this is also the painting most frequently exhibited in the U.S.
Rumbaut was a founding member of the artists’ collective Grupo Punto, based in Cienfuegos, Cuba. Members of the group studied in Havana, and returned home to the historic French-colonial town to set up studios. As a collective, Grupo Punto worked in collaboration on larger multi-disciplinary projects, often with guest artists from Cuba and abroad. Their last initiative was titled Todos los que se han detenido son enemigos mortales de los que siguen andado.
